ACCRA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana late Monday declared former President and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 presidential election.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that Mahama secured 56.55 percent of the total valid votes, while Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party, garnered 41.61 percent.

The EC said the results were based on 267 of the 276 constituencies, with the remaining nine constituencies' results pending. However, Mensa said that even if all valid votes from the outstanding constituencies were added to the runner-up's tally, they would not alter the outcome.

"By the powers vested in me as the returning officer of the presidential elections, I hereby declare His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, representing the NDC, as the winner of the 2024 presidential election and the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana," the EC chairperson said.

Born in 1958 in the Savannah region, Mahama previously served as Ghana's president from 2012 to 2017.
