QINGDAO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Cheers erupted as Ronaldinho made his entrance at the 2024 Global 3v3 Street Football Tournament final in Qingdao, China. Athletes from around the world scrambled for photos with the Brazilian football legend, who appeared wearing a bright pink jersey.
Known affectionately as the "Football Elf" by Chinese fans, Ronaldinho spoke about his enduring passion for the sport in an interview with Xinhua on Monday.
Reflecting on his goal in Brazil's 4-0 win over China during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldinho said the memory still resonates with him 22 years later. The 44-year-old also noted the progress in Chinese football, expressing optimism about the team's performance in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Brazil's journey through the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup has been challenging, with the team currently fifth in the ten-team rankings. Ronaldinho, who won the 2002 tournament with Brazil, voiced unwavering support for his country. "It is not easy to stay strong throughout the qualifiers, but I firmly believe that Brazil will still achieve good results in the qualifiers," he said.
Although long retired from professional play, Ronaldinho's passion for the game remains undiminished. "Football is beautiful anyway," he said.
The former Barcelona and AC Milan attacker also praised the rise of 3v3 football, a fast-paced format he actively supports. "I am happy with the progress that has been made in the development of 3v3 football, and I hope that it will go far in the future," he said.
