RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Argentine manager Gabriel Milito has parted ways with Atletico Mineiro by mutual consent, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Wednesday.
Atletico football director Victor Bagy made the announcement following the team's 2-0 defeat at Vasco da Gama on the penultimate match day of Brazil's top-flight season.
"We came to an agreement, both on our side and his, that we would not continue working together," Bagy told reporters. "It pains us because Gabriel is a very committed manager but when things aren't going well you need to change direction."
Milito, 44, led Atletico to 23 wins, 20 draws and 19 losses after replacing Luiz Felipe Scolari as manager in March.
Atletico is currently 14th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings and has not registered a victory since October.
Despite their erratic form in the league, the Belo Horizonte outfit reached the final of two major cup competitions this year: the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores, both of which they lost.
Former Barcelona and Argentina international defender Milito had previously managed Argentinos Juniors, Estudiantes and Independiente, among other clubs. ■
