JERUSALEM, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Israel and Argentina agreed on Monday to expand their defense cooperation, focusing on cybersecurity and drones, Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz announced in a statement.

The decision was agreed upon during a meeting between Katz and his Argentinian counterpart Luis Alfonso Petri, who is on an official visit to Israel. The visit comes as Argentina, under President Javier Milei, a far-right libertarian elected in November 2023, remains one of the few South American countries still voicing support for Israel during the Gaza conflict, amid a regional trend of withdrawing support.

The agreement includes plans to strengthen cooperation in several sectors. The Israeli Defense Ministry said the two countries agreed "to expand their defense cooperation, focusing on joint projects in cyber defense, unmanned aerial vehicles, border protection, satellite communications, and future government-to-government contracts in light arms, light munitions, radios, and related equipment."

"This visit underscores the nations' mutual commitment to security and defense collaboration, reinforcing their ongoing efforts to work together and deepen their ties," the ministry added.
