BEIRUT, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Israeli naval commandos seized a Lebanese man in a pre-dawn raid on Friday, penetrating deep into Lebanese territory in an unusual operation that has drawn protest from Beirut, Lebanese and Israeli officials said on Saturday.
The operation, which took place in the coastal city of Batroun some 140 km north of Israel's maritime border with Lebanon, targeted Imad Amhaz, identified by Israel as a "significant figure" in Hezbollah's naval force.
The Israeli military later confirmed its elite Shayetet 13 unit carried out the operation.
According to Lebanon's state news agency NNA, about 20 Israeli commandos conducted a sea landing near a beach chalet where Amhaz was staying before departing on speedboats with the captive.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has filed an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council over the incident, his office said on Saturday. Mikati also consulted with military commanders and the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL, which said it was not involved in the Israeli operations and was investigating the matter.
Hezbollah has not commented on the incident. ■
