COLOMBO/NEW DELHI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, was observed across Sri Lanka and India. Lamps, lanterns, and fireworks were lit to mark the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

Diwali provides an opportunity to spruce up the home, buy new clothes, and, of course, enjoy parties, feasting, and the exchange of gifts. This year, the festival falls on Oct. 31.
