COLOMBO, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan police on Thursday seized 40 kg of heroin that has a street value of about 1 billion rupees (about 3.3 million U.S. dollars).
The police reported that the drugs, which were found hidden on a vacant plot of land in the country's Uva Province, belonged to a well-known organized crime syndicate.
The discovery was made based on information obtained from a gang member on Wednesday, the police said.
The Army intelligence assisted the police in the operation.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently pledged to dismantle organized criminal networks during his term in office. ■
