ISTANBUL, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Turkish and Iranian foreign ministers emphasized on Saturday the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, warning that the escalating conflict poses a serious risk of regional war with global consequences.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his visiting Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi made the remarks at a joint press conference after a meeting in Türkiye's largest city Istanbul.

"The risk of the war spreading throughout the region should never be underestimated... Israel must cease its attacks on Lebanon and abandon all forms of aggressive behavior," Fidan reiterated, noting that Türkiye opposes war in the region and advocates for a "rational and calm" approach to the situation.

He also called on "external actors" to avoid taking irreversible steps.

Commenting on his Friday meeting with a Hamas delegation in Istanbul, the Turkish minister said they discussed strategies for increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza and ways to foster international mobilization for support.

For his part, Araghchi praised Türkiye's stance in supporting the Palestinian people and opposing Israel's actions, calling for a "permanent and immediate" ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

The minister condemned Israel for turning the region into a powder keg, seriously jeopardizing peace and security. "We are in favor of peace, but we are also prepared for any scenario," the minister said.
