SAO PAULO, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Dutch forward Memphis Depay scored his first goal for Corinthians as the Sao Paulo club romped to a 5-2 home victory over Athletico Paranaense in Brazil's Serie A on Thursday.
Depay curled a 22-yard free kick into the top left corner to help his side ease relegation fears with their seventh win of the season.
Corinthians are now 16th in the 20-team standings with 32 points, a point clear of the relegation zone with eight games remaining.
"It was a very beautiful moment for me," Depay told reporters after the match. "I'm trying to help the club as much as possible. I hope this is the first of many goals. The most important thing today was that we got the three points."
In Thursday's only other match, Vinicius Lima and Jhon Arias scored second-half goals as Fluminense clinched a 2-0 away win over Flamengo in their Rio de Janeiro derby.
Lima combined with Kaua Elias before slotting a low finish past Agustin Rossi and Arias doubled the lead with a first-time effort from the edge of the six-yard box following Matheus Martinelli's cross.
The result lifted Fluminense to 15th, two points clear of the relegation zone. Flamengo remain fourth with 51 points, nine points behind leaders Botafogo. ■
