BEIRUT, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Hezbollah said Thursday that members of the Islamic Resistance hit with guided missiles an Israeli tank advancing towards a city in southern Lebanon in the morning, destroying the tank.
"An Israeli enemy force consisting of five tanks and infantry elements attempted to advance towards the Ras al-Naqoura axis in the western sector of southern Lebanon," and the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted one of the tanks "with appropriate missile weapons," Hezbollah said in a statement.
It provided no detailed information on the casualties.
Meanwhile, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua that missiles were fired at an Israeli armored force trying to advance toward the Ras al-Naqoura axis.
According to the sources, the Israeli army has paved the way for its infiltration into Lebanon with heavy artillery shelling of the Ras al-Naqoura area and its surroundings, and 13 airstrikes targeting seven villages and towns in the western and eastern sectors.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Thursday in a statement that two UN peacekeepers were injured after an Israeli tank fired its weapon toward a watchtower in UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, south Lebanon.
So far the Israeli side has not yet commented on those attacks.
Since Sept. 23, the Israeli army has been launching intensive airstrikes across Lebanon in a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah. It has also launched a "limited" ground military operation in Lebanon.
Since Oct. 8, 2023, Hezbollah and the Israeli army have been exchanging fire across the Lebanese-Israeli border amid fears of a broader conflict as the war between Hamas and Israel continues in the Gaza Strip. ■
