BEIRUT, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on Tuesday rose to 22, with 80 others wounded, the Lebanese health ministry reported on Wednesday.
The ministry noted that these casualties occurred in various governorates across the country, bringing the total number of deaths to 2,141 and the injured to 10,099 since the start of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict on Oct. 8, 2023.
Also on Wednesday, Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that Arab and international efforts to halt Israeli aggression in Lebanon are ongoing. However, he pointed out that Israeli intransigence is obstructing progress.
"Lebanon's friends from Arab and foreign countries are also continuing to pressure for a ceasefire and discuss the required political steps, the most important of which is Israel's full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701," said Mikati.
Since Sept. 23, the Israeli military has been carrying out an extensive air campaign in Lebanon, dubbed "Arrows of the North," in a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah.
Since October last year, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been exchanging fire along the Lebanese-Israeli border, stoking fears of a wider conflict as the war between Hamas and Israel continues in Gaza. ■
