ABUJA -- The death toll of a boat accident earlier this week in Niger State in central Nigeria has risen to 42, as more bodies were recovered Friday, a local official said.
Abdullahi Baba-Arah, head of the State Emergency Management Agency, told reporters that at least 17 more bodies had been recovered since Thursday, six of them found early Friday. (Nigeria-Accident)

OTTAWA -- A major fire broke out in a hostel building in Old Montreal of Canada early Friday morning, killing at least two people, local media reported.

GENEVA -- At least 70 people, including 10 women and three infants, were killed in a series of gang attacks in Haiti on Thursday, according to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Office.
The UN human rights body expressed its horror over the attacks in a statement published on Friday. UN spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan noted that members of the gang Gran Grif used automatic rifles to fire on civilians, resulting in widespread casualties and forcing many residents to flee.
