RIGA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Latvia's parliament ratified the country's accession to the International Energy Agency (IEA) on Thursday, marking the final step in the process, according to a parliamentary press release.

The accession is expected to bolster Latvia's energy security and support its transition to clean energy. Latvia's Climate and Energy Ministry highlighted that IEA membership will enhance national security, particularly in times of crisis, and allow the country to engage in global energy policy discussions beyond the European Union (EU).

IEA members also benefit from access to expert analysis, forecasts, and a comprehensive database of energy policies across all sectors, said the ministry.

IEA member states currently account for 80 percent of global energy consumption.

Latvia was invited to join the IEA in fall 2022.
