KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia aims to use its upcoming term as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025 to boost digital growth and cooperation among the grouping, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said on Thursday.
Through collaborations, policy leadership, and infrastructure development, Malaysia can strengthen the digital content ecosystem, foster innovation, and position itself as the regional leader in digital content creation and distribution, he said in his speech at the launch of the Malaysia Digital Content Festival (MYDCF).
"This will not only boost the local economy but also create a dynamic and interconnected digital content network across Southeast Asia," he said.
"Together, we can drive innovation, foster creativity, and build a digital economy that not only benefits Malaysians, but contributes to global digital transformation," he added.
Gobind also said Malaysia is currently home to over 300 digital content studios, with more than 180 original intellectual properties (IPs) in animation and gaming, with the digital creative industry having generated 6.3 billion ringgit (1.4 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue in 2022, with exports totaling 850 million ringgit and supporting over 11,000 jobs.
"This underscores the sector's immense potential to generate high-value jobs and make a significant contribution to our economy," he said
At the same time, sub-sectors within the creative technology industry are also thriving, with the global animation market size expected to increase to over 587 billion dollars in 2030.
"The global game market is also booming significantly, riding on the tailwinds of the global digitalization phenomenon," he said, adding that Malaysia is working to establish itself as a regional digital creative producer hub by 2030. ■
