SYDNEY, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Investigations are underway by Australian police after a man was shot in Sydney's western suburbs on Wednesday night.

Police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement on Thursday that emergency services were called to a property in Winston Hills, approximately 25 km west of Sydney's central business district, at 10:50 p.m. local time on Wednesday night following reports of a shooting.

Officers arrived at the scene and found a 28-year-old man who had been shot.

Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition where he remains in a stable condition and under police guard.

A crime scene has been established at the scene of the shooting and at a nearby site where a vehicle was found ablaze shortly after the shooting.

"Fire & Rescue NSW attended and worked to extinguish the blaze. However, the car was destroyed," NSW police said.

"The vehicle was seized to be forensically examined."

Police detectives urged anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage related to the incident to come forward.
