BEIRUT, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplanes on Thursday launched a series of airstrikes targeting the outskirts of villages, forested areas, and valleys in southern Lebanon, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua.

The sources, who spoke anonymously, reported that in less than half an hour, 15 raids targeted large areas in southern Lebanon's western, central, and eastern border sectors.

"The planes fired about 30 air-to-ground missiles at Hezbollah sites and the outskirts of more than 20 border towns and villages," the sources added.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah stated that it had attacked headquarters and sites in northern Israel with missiles and drones in response to Israel's actions.

"The Islamic Resistance fighters targeted a position of the Israeli enemy soldiers at the Israeli Al-Marj site situated in Wadi Hunin, across from the village of Markaba in southern Lebanon, killing and wounding several of them," it said in a statement.

Lebanese military sources noted that the launch of several drones and about 100 surface-to-surface missiles was monitored from southern Lebanon to northern Israel, some of which were intercepted by Israeli Iron Dome missiles, while many exploded in the airspace over southeast Lebanon.

Tensions escalated along the border separating Lebanon and Israel following two consecutive days of explosions involving pagers and handheld radios across Lebanon, which resulted in at least 37 fatalities and 2,931 injuries. Hezbollah has attributed the explosions to Israel.
