JAKARTA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia's eastern Papua province just before midnight on Monday, according to the country's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency.
The tremor occurred at 23:53 Jakarta time (1653 GMT), with its epicenter located 57 km southeast of Sarmi Regency at a depth of 24 km beneath the land.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences seismic activity due to its position in this earthquake-prone and volcanically active region. ■
