VALLETTA, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Malta endured a warmer and wetter-than-average summer this year, with high temperatures leading to warmer sea conditions, according to a report published by the Meteorological Office on Thursday.
The report, which covers June, July, and August, highlights several significant weather patterns and events which all found that the season was both warmer and wetter than the climatic norm.
According to the Met Office, the total rainfall recorded during the three-month period reached 17 mm, surpassing the climatic norm by 1.4 mm. This excess was largely attributed to a particularly wet day in August. On Aug. 22 alone, 13.2 mm of rain fell, pushing the month's total to 3.5 mm above average and tipping the scales for the entire summer.
In terms of temperatures, the summer of 2024 continued the trend of above-average warmth. All three months exceeded the climatic norm by at least 1.6 degrees Celsius. June saw an average temperature of 25.8 degrees Celsius, July reached 28.5 while August topped out at 29.1 degrees.
The warmer-than-usual temperatures also affected the sea temperatures by between 1.7 degrees and 2.2 degrees above the norm. ■
