HANOI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's consumer price index (CPI) in the first eight months of this year went up by 4.04 percent year-on-year, as the country's core inflation rose 2.71 percent, the General Statistics Office said Friday.

CPI in August was reported to stay stable compared to July and increased 3.45 percent year-on-year, said the office.

Price hikes in August were reported in 10 out of the 11 items in the calculation basket.

Items posting the most significant price hikes during the cited period included housing, electricity, water, petrol and construction materials with a 0.29 percent rise, restaurants and food services with a 0.27 percent increase.

Transport was the only item reporting a decline in August due to the impacts of decreasing petrol and oil prices.

Vietnam has set the target of keeping the CPI for this year at 4 to 4.5 percent.
