KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- A market caught fire in Kandahar city, the capital of south Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on Saturday, causing huge damage, provincial police spokesperson Mullah Asadullah Jamshid said.

The fire broke out at around noon in a market in the 2nd Police District of Kandahar city, engulfing the whole market selling commodities, mostly women's clothes, with losses worth 20 million afghani (about 281,700 U.S. dollars), the officer said.

The blaze was caused by an electric circuit problem, and was put under control by firefighters within hours.
