ANKARA, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Lake Salda in southwestern Türkiye's Burdur province has been included in UNESCO's top 100 geological heritage site list, the Turkish state-run TRT World reported Thursday.

The addition was reportedly announced by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) at the 37th International Geological Congress in Busan, South Korea.

Lake Salda, designated by Türkiye as a "special environmental protection area," is known for its unique turquoise-colored waters and white sandy beaches.

The lake has attracted more attention after NASA announced in 2021 that it resembles a crater on Mars.

The geological heritage site list, part of a project initiated by the IUGS and supported by UNESCO, is curated every two years.
