HOHHOT, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Higher People's Court of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region upheld the death sentence of Li Jianping, former secretary of the Party working committee of Hohhot economic and technological development zone, in a second trial on Tuesday.

Li was sentenced to death for corruption, bribery, misappropriation of public funds, and collusion with a criminal syndicate.

The ruling will be submitted to the Supreme People's Court for examination and approval.

Li appealed his death sentence, which was handed down by an intermediate court in Inner Mongolia in September 2022.

The ruling found him guilty of multiple crimes, noting his extreme malice, severe social impact and the gravity of his offenses.

Between 2006 and 2018, Li exploited various positions he held to embezzle more than 1.437 billion yuan (about 202 million U.S. dollars) of state funds, receive gifts and money totaling more than 577 million yuan, and misappropriate over 1.055 billion yuan in public funds from state-owned companies.

He also maintained close contact with a leader of a criminal syndicate and condoned the organization's illegal activities.
