BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- 20th Century Studios' sci-fi thriller "Alien: Romulus" continued to lead the Chinese mainland's daily box office on Tuesday, according to the China Movie Data Information Network.

The seventh installment of the successful "Alien" franchise, the movie grossed over 53.09 million yuan (about 7.45 million U.S. dollars) on its fifth screening day.

It tells the story of a group of young space colonists who encounter the universe's most terrifying life form while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station.

Domestic crime film "Go for Broke," raking in 20.88 million yuan on Tuesday, ranked second on the daily chart.

It was followed by the Japanese animation "Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram" with 13.69 million yuan in revenue on the day.

The total box office revenue on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday hit 121.27 million yuan.
