MADRID, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Mallorca frustrated Kylian Mbappe's La Liga debut with Real Madrid as they drew with the reigning La Liga champions and clear favorite for this season's title at Mallorca Son Moix Stadium on Sunday night.
Rodrygo opened the scoring in the 12th minute, collecting a backheel from Vinicius and curling his shot into the corner of the net.
Madrid looked threatening but failed to create many clear chances after the goal, while Mallorca put a couple of dangerous balls into the Madrid area as the half progressed.
The home side were leveled two minutes after the break when the excellent Vedat Muriqi powered home a header from Dani Rodriguez's 52nd-minute corner.
Madrid lacked control in midfield and veteran Luka Modric replaced Aurelien Tchouameni in the 62nd minute and the Croatian started a move that saw Mallorca keeper, Dominik Greif save with his foot to deny Mbappe.
Lucas Vazquez, Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz all came on for the closing minutes for Madrid, but Mallorca were closest to a winning goal when he saw two shots blocked in the Madrid area and the game ended with Madrid defender Ferland Mendy sent off for a late and high challenge on Vedat Muriqi.
Rayo Vallecano stunned Real Sociedad in Sunday's opening game with a 2-1 win in San Sebastian.
Second half goals from Jorge de Frutos and Olympic gold medal winner Sergio Camello put the visitors 2-0 ahead and a goal from Martin Zubimendi (who received an ovation after rejecting a move to Liverpool in the week) was too late for the home side to save a point.
Mikel Merino didn't play for Real Sociedad, which points to him completing a move to Arsenal in the coming days.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice as FC Barcelona won 2-1 in Valencia on Saturday night.
Hugo Duro had nodded Valencia ahead and seen another effort cleared off the line before the Barca striker scored from close range on the stroke of halftime.
He then gave Hansi Flick a winning start as Barca coach from the penalty spot after Raphinha was fouled four minutes after the break and Valencia failed to threaten in the remaining minutes on a hot and humid night at Mestalla Stadium.
Osasuna and Leganes drew 1-1, with Juan Cruz putting newly promoted Leganes ahead with an excellent goal after 21 minutes, only for bad luck to deny them a win after Aimar Oroz's ball off the post hit Leganes defender Juan Soriano to bounce into the net.
The season kicked off on Thursday night when Athletic Club Bilbao drew 1-1 at home to Getafe while Betis and Girona drew by the same score.
Celta Vigo came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Alaves on Friday and Las Palmas twice came from behind to take a point with a 2-2 draw at home to Sevilla.
Atletico Madrid visit Villarreal and newly promoted Valladolid and Espanyol face each other on Monday. ■
