NEW DELHI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rakshabandhan, the festival symbolizing the bond between siblings, was celebrated across India on Monday. Sisters tied a decorated thread called "Rakhi" on their brothers' wrists and received gifts in return.

The word Rakshabandhan is made of two Hindi words, viz. Raksha and Bandhan, which mean Protection and Bond, respectively. It symbolizes the brothers' vow to protect their sisters against all ills in the society.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the countrymen on the occasion. "Best wishes to all countrymen on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, a festival symbolizing the immense love between brother and sister. May this holy festival bring new sweetness in the relationships of all of you and happiness, prosperity and good fortune in life," he said in a post on X (erstwhile Twitter).

President of India Droupadi Murmu also wished the countrymen saying, "All the countrymen take a pledge to ensure the safety and respect of women in our society."
