ANURADHAPURA, Sri Lanka, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- As a symbol of fortune and good luck, elephants are living a better life in Sri Lanka with the country's efforts to protect them from poaching.

Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation will conduct a countrywide census on wild elephants on Aug. 17-19. The countrywide census of the elephant population in 2011 estimated that the minimum number of elephants in Sri Lanka was 5,879.
