AMMAN, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday called on the European Union (EU) to take immediate measures against Israel's continued offensive on Gaza.
During a phone call with EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, Safadi stressed the need for the EU to take decisive and practical steps against Israel's continued "aggression" in Gaza, the violation of Palestinian rights in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the desecration of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and Israel's ongoing breaches of international law, which are pushing the region towards the brink of a regional war.
Safadi thanked Borrell for his clear stance in calling for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, adherence to international law, and a halt to Israel's illegal actions in all the occupied Palestinian territories.
Safadi urged the EU to impose sanctions on far-right Israeli officials who promote hate speech and racism, support "settler terrorism," and violate the sanctity of holy sites in Jerusalem.
Both sides affirmed their support for the efforts of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to reach a prisoner-hostage exchange deal between Israel and Hamas. ■
