PARIS, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Ellesse Andrews of New Zealand produced a magnificent display of sprinting to claim the Olympic sprint gold medal over Lea Friedrich of Germany.

Andrews won the first two races of the best-of-three final to win gold by the direct route and complete a brilliant Olympics.

Her win on Sunday means Andrews leaves Paris with gold medals in women's sprint and keirin, as well as silver from the team sprint.

Andrews wasn't in the best position going into the last lap of the first of race, as Friedrich was able to gain height off the curve, but she held off the German's challenge off the back straight and accelerated over the line.

She was perfectly positioned in the second race, gaining a height advantage to open up a three-bike advantage over Friedrich and hold it along the back straight and into the final curve.

In the semifinals, Friedrich beat Dutch rider Hetty van der Wouw, while Andrews was in control as she beat Emma Finucane of Britain 2-0.

In the race for bronze, Finucane was too fast for Van der Wouw and took the bronze after comfortably winning the two races against the Dutch rider.
