JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The South African government has been making preparations for its Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency and the hosting of the G20 Summit in 2025, a senior government official said Thursday.
"The country was expected to assume the G20 Presidency on December 1 this year and preparations for the G20 Summit next year are already underway," Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, minister in the Presidency, said at a media briefing.
An interministerial committee had been assigned the responsibility to organize the event, according to Ntshavheni.
"South Africa will continue to use opportunities to lead and host international forums such as the G20 to focus global attention on the development challenges confronting Africa and the countries of the Global South," Ntshavheni said.
Created in 1999, the G20 is a main forum for international cooperation on financial and economic issues. It comprises 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union.
The member countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Türkiye, Britain, and the United States. ■
