ZAGREB, July 31 (Xinhua) -- The ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has endorsed the candidacy of Dragan Primorac, former minister of science, education and sports, for president in the upcoming presidential elections in December, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced on Wednesday.

Plenkovic told reporters that the talks with Primorac have been going on for a long time.

Earlier on Wednesday, Primorac announced his candidacy for president in a video message.

From 2003 to 2009, Primorac served as minister of science, education and sports in the HDZ-led government. In 2009, he ran as an independent candidate in the presidential elections, but failed to be elected after getting only six percent of the votes.

Incumbent President Zoran Milanovic, in office since 2020, announced in June that he would seek another five-year term. The biggest opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, supports his candidacy.
