PARIS, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion Yuto Horigome of Japan took gold in the men's street skateboarding at Paris 2024 on Monday after a stunning trick as a finale, overtaking U.S. rivals Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston.
With Horigome's victory, Japanese skaters have now claimed gold medals in both women's and men's street skateboarding. In the women's final on Sunday, Japan's Coco Yoshizawa and Liz Akama wrapped up both gold and silver medals.
The street skateboarding competition at Paris 2024 consisted of two runs and five trick displays, with the final score decided by the sum of highest run score and highest score of two tricks.
Horigome performed solidly in his first trick, earning a score of 94.16. However, he made mistakes in the following three tricks and ranked second. Despite the setback, Horigome bounced back in his fifth and final trick, delivering an outstanding performance to earn the highest score of 97.08 in the entire competition. With a total score of 281.14, he narrowly surpassed the American skaters.
Eaton started strong to rank first in the preliminaries. After having been overtaken by Horigome in the final trick, he attempted more difficult moves but failed to land them, earning the silver medal with a score of 281.04.
His teammate Huston, leading after the first two runs, made mistakes in all three of his final tricks and finished in third place.
Brazil's Kelvin Hoefler, silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, placed only sixth. ■
