MEXICO CITY, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Javier Aguirre has been appointed manager of Mexico's national team for a third time.

The 65-year-old replaces Diego Cocca, who was sacked following Mexico's failure to advance beyond the knockout stage of the Copa America this month.

"He [Aguirre] is without a doubt the Mexican coach with the longest and most recognized career abroad and he also has in-depth knowledge of processes at the international level," national team's director Duilio Davino said.

Former Mexico international defender Rafael Marquez will be one of the assistant coaches, having left his post as coach of Barcelona's reserves team last month.

Aguirre guided Mexico to the last 16 of the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. He had also been in charge of the Japanese and Egyptian national teams over a managerial career that has spanned almost 30 years.

Mexico City-born Aguirre has spent much of his career coaching in Spain, having had stints in charge of Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, Osasuna, Zaragoza, Leganes and Mallorca.

His first game in charge will be a friendly against New Zealand in the United States on September 7.
