FUZHOU, July 23 (Xinhua) -- East China's Fujian Province raised the emergency response level for typhoons from Level IV to Level III on Tuesday in the face of Typhoon Gaemi, the third of this year.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the center of Gaemi was located approximately 505 km southeast of Taiwan's Yilan County. It is moving northwest with an average speed of 20 km per hour and will intensify into a super typhoon, according to the Fujian provincial meteorological observatory.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall along the eastern coast of central or northern Taiwan on Wednesday night. After crossing the island, it is projected to make a second landfall on Thursday afternoon along the coast between Fujian's Fuding and Jinjiang, said the observatory.
The typhoon will further move northward to inland areas of China.
Lin Xiaohong, chief forecaster at the Fujian provincial meteorological observatory, said that heavy rainfall is anticipated across most of the province, with the most intense precipitation likely to occur in the central and northern regions.
Cumulative rainfall is projected to range from 150 to 350 millimeters, with some areas experiencing over 600 millimeters, Lin added. ■
