BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.17 percent to 2,982.31 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.27 percent higher at 8,903.23 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 669.8 billion yuan (about 93.9 billion U.S. dollars), down from 672.2 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to railway equipment and semiconductor sectors led the gains, while those in sectors of precious metal and real estate reported major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.45 percent to close at 1,725.49 points Friday.
