NEW DELHI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least three militants were killed Wednesday in a gunfight with police in the northeastern state of Assam, officials said.
Three policemen were also reported wounded in the stand-off, and they have been hospitalized.
The gunfight, according to police, broke out in Bhuban Hills of Cachar district, about 330 km southeast of Dispur, the capital city of Assam.
"In an early morning operation, police killed three Hmar militants from Assam and neighboring Manipur. Police also recovered two AK rifles, one other rifle, and one pistol," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a statement posted on social media.
Police said the gunfight was triggered after its personnel cordoned off the area on specific intelligence suggesting the presence of militants. ■
