KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's industrial production index (IPI) rose 2.4 percent year on year in May, driven by steady output growth in the manufacturing sector, official data showed Friday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the manufacturing sector grew by 4.6 percent in May. The electricity output also expanded by 4.2 percent.

The mining sector output, however, fell 6.9 percent.

Compared to the previous month, the IPI rebounded to 3.5 percent from negative 7.6 percent.

For the period of January to May, the IPI improved by 3.6 percent as compared to 1.9 percent recorded in the same period of the previous year.

During the period, all sectors posted an expansion, namely the mining index, manufacturing index, and electricity index.
