BAGHDAD, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were killed and one wounded on Monday in an attack by the extremist Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraqi Salahudin province, a provincial police source said.
The incident occurred when IS militants opened fire on the civilians who were on a hunting trip in a rugged area near the town of Amerli, some 160 km north of Baghdad, Colonel Mohammed al-Bazi from the media office of the police command of Salahudin province told Xinhua.
Iraqi security forces rushed to the scene and launched a search operation in the area looking for the attackers who fled the scene, al-Bazi said.
The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. ■
