BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A special ceremony was held in Brunei on Sunday to honour babies born on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, local media reported.

The first day of Muharram marks the beginning of a new year in Islamic calendar. The ceremony was held at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital in Brunei. Fifteen babies were born in the hospital on Sunday, consisting of nine boys and six girls, the local daily Borneo Bulletin reported on Monday.

According to the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics of Brunei, the total population of the Southeast Asian country in 2023 consisted of 237,700 males (52.8 percent) and 212,800 females (47.2 percent). The sex ratio was 111.7 males for every 100 females.
