NEW DELHI, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Two Indian army troopers and six militants were killed in two separate gunfights in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Sunday.

The gunfights broke out Saturday in two villages of Kulgam, about 70 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"As per the confirmation of the bodies, six militants have been killed in the twin gunfights in Kulgam so far," the region's police chief RR Swain told reporters on Sunday.

Police said both operations were carried out on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of the militants in these villages.

The deadly gunfight has once again raised concerns about the security situation in the disputed region.

A guerilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.
