CAIRO, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Egypt condemned in strong terms on Sunday the deadly Israeli bombing of a UN school-converted shelter for displaced Palestinians in Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

"Egypt denounced the continued Israeli violations of the provisions of international law and international humanitarian law," said a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, demanding Israel "stop targeting defenseless civilians in the Gaza Strip."

At least 16 Palestinians were killed, most of them children and women, in an Israeli bombing of the UN-run Al-Jaouni school that sheltered thousands of displaced people in Gaza's Nuseirat area on Saturday afternoon, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported.

The ongoing Israeli onslaught on Gaza since Oct. 7 last year has so far killed 38,153 Palestinians and injured 87,828 others, according to the latest update released by the Gaza-based health authorities on Sunday. The war also led to massive destruction of homes, hospitals, and infrastructure in the enclave.

The Israeli military campaign followed a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israeli towns, in which about 1,200 Israelis were killed and around 250 others were taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies.
