FREETOWN, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Friday signed a 660,000-euro (about 713,792 U.S. dollars) grant agreement with the Sierra Leonean government to safeguard the rich biodiversity of the Loma Mountains and its surrounding areas.
Under the agreement, a three-year project will be initiated with a focus on conservation efforts and sustainable development initiatives implemented by Sierra Leonean authorities and relevant stakeholders.
Gerald Hatler, head of Cooperation of the EU in Sierra Leone, highlighted the significance of this initiative, saying the EU is solidifying its commitment to conserving 80 percent of Sierra Leone's natural parks.
"It is imperative that we unite our efforts to protect the invaluable ecosystems of Loma Mountains before it is too late. This project signifies the commencement of a collective endeavor towards environmental conservation and sustainable development in Sierra Leone," said Hatler.
Richard Marah, director of the Loma Conservation Community Program, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that culminated in the signing of the grant agreement, emphasizing the vital role that indigenous communities and women play in environmental preservation.
According to him, the project marks a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone's conservation journey, exemplifying an inclusive, community-led strategy to protect the natural heritage of Loma Mountains while promoting sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.
The Loma Mountains, the highest mountain range in northeastern Sierra Leone, is home to a wide variety of wildlife. ■
