WELLINGTON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand and Nauru are deepening cooperation on economic resilience and education, among strengthened engagements in enhanced political, security, and development ties, a statement of the New Zealand government said on Thursday.

New Zealand is contributing 5 million NZ dollars (3.06 million U.S. dollars) to efforts in conjunction with Australia to strengthen the provision of high-quality schooling in Nauru, as the good functioning of Nauru's education system is vital to the Pacific island country's future, it said.

New Zealand is also committed to lifting its scholarships program for Nauruan students, said New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters while visiting Nauru, the second leg of his Pacific tour this week, after Solomon Islands and to be followed by Niue.

"We are also determined to help Nauru ensure it is making the most of its resources, including fisheries, to boost economic resilience," said Peters, who discussed shared economic and development priorities as well as regional challenges with Nauru's leadership.
