YANGON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar aims to release over 40 million fingerlings into rivers, creeks, dams and natural lakes across the Southeast Asian country in the current fiscal year 2024-25, according to a government official said Thursday.

From April 1 to June 30, over 11 million fingerlings had already been released, accounting for about 28 percent of the target, Kyaw Moe Aung, a deputy director at the aquaculture division under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, told Xinhua.

Fingerling production is estimated at over 100 million for the current fiscal year starting April. Of them, over 40 million will be released into natural water bodies and the rest will be sold to fish farmers, said the official.

Fingerling releases are conducted in regions and states around the country with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of fish resources, preventing fish species extinction, and creating job opportunities for local people, he added.

In fiscal year 2023-24, over 50 million fingerlings were added to natural water bodies in Myanmar, out of a total production of over 100 million fingerlings, according to the official.
