YANGON, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 53 people were killed and 186 others injured in 99 road accidents on Myanmar's Yangon-Mandalay highway in the first half of this year, a highway police officer said on Wednesday.

The figures were compared to 53 deaths and 162 injuries reported from 83 road accidents in the same period last year, the officer told Xinhua.

The main causes of car accidents in Myanmar include vehicle defects, human faults, and road and weather conditions. Most of the road accidents reported in the Southeast Asian country are due to reckless driving, he added.

The 587 km Yangon-Mandalay expressway, the busiest highway in Myanmar, connects the country's commercial city Yangon with its second largest city Mandalay.
