JERUSALEM, July 1 (Xinhua) -- An Israeli import reform came into effect on Monday with an aim to streamline procedures and boost competition, the Ministry of Economy and Industry announced.

Dubbed "No Stopping at the Port," the reform eliminates pre-import hurdles for thousands of consumer goods, potentially leading to lower prices and a wider selection for shoppers.

The reform streamlines the import process for a wide range of products subject to official standards, including common household appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners, and toasters, along with electronics like computers and televisions, as well as toys, baby products, and bicycles.

The reform excludes products deemed high-risk to public safety or the environment, such as medical equipment and construction materials.

Previously, importing these goods required lab testing, certificates, and declarations, incurring costs that could reach 9 percent of the import value.

Under the new system, importers simply need to declare at customs that their products meet the relevant Israeli standard, which aligns with European benchmarks.

The ministry anticipates the reform will free up importers' time and resources, allowing them to focus on improving service and product availability for consumers.
