YANGON, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Young hairdressers from Myanmar Barber Academy are offering free haircuts in Botataung Township, Yangon, to help poor people.
"Free Haircuts for Everyone campaign has been running for over a year and we intend to keep it going continuously," James, a hairdressing instructor from Myanmar Barber Academy, told Xinhua.
"During the period of rising prices, our free haircut campaign is especially useful for the poor people. A haircut at a shop costs at least 2,000 or 3,000 kyats (about 1.42 U.S. dollars), and it's a monthly expense. By coming to us, people can save that money and use it elsewhere," he said.
Hairdressing services are offered with 15 to 18 hairdressers every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time, he added.
James said that during the rainy season, at least 30 to 40 people come for haircuts per day, while in the winter and summer seasons, at least 50 people come per day.
Htein Lin, 57, said, "There are some people who can't even afford a haircut. So, I am grateful for this service. I cut my hair once a month and by coming here, I can save money that I would have spent on haircuts."
"This is my second time coming here. The young hairdressers are kind-hearted. I don't need to look in the mirror because they cut my hair carefully. I am always satisfied with my hairstyle. They take their time and do it carefully," Soe Naing, 64, said.
"I saw this popular free haircut on social media. This is really supportive of poor people. We need haircuts once or twice a month, so this is very helpful. I encourage the team and appreciate this kind of charity," Shwe Win, 60, said.
Min Ko, 43, said while waiting for a haircut, "I always come here to get a haircut, and some come from far away to get a haircut. I really praise them for their efforts. With everything being expensive today, this free haircut campaign is very supportive of grassroots people." ■
