TOKYO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Core consumer prices in Japan's capital rose 2.1 percent in June from a year before, government data showed Friday.

The core consumer price index (CPI) in Tokyo, considered a leading indicator of nationwide figures, accelerated from the previous month's 1.9 percent gain, reaching the Bank of Japan's 2-percent target for the first time in three months, according to the internal affairs ministry.

Overall energy prices went up as the government reduced subsidies to cover the higher utilities charges. Electricity fees rose 10.8 percent year-on-year, while city gas bills increased 3.8 percent.

Meanwhile, prices of food excluding fresh items were up 3 percent, down 0.2 percentage points from May.
