BAGHDAD, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The government of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on Wednesday set Oct. 20, 2024, as the date for the regional parliamentary elections.
President of the Kurdistan Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani decided the date for the elections and called on the regional authorities to coordinate and cooperate with the Independent High Elections Commission to implement the decision, Dilshad Shahab, the spokesperson of the Kurdistan region presidency, said at a press conference.
The decision was renewed from a previous one in which Barzani set June 10, 2024, as the election date.
The last regional parliamentary elections were held in 2018, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party taking the lead with 45 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan with 21 seats in the regional parliament.
The regional parliamentary elections were supposed to be held in 2022 but failed due to political differences. ■
