MANILA, June 26 (Xinhua) -- A truck driver and his helper were crushed to death after their vehicle loaded with steel sheets came to a sudden stop in the middle of the highway to avoid hitting a crossing pedestrian in Davao City, police said Wednesday.
Police said the accident happened at 2:55 p.m. local time on Tuesday near the entrance of an international airport in the city.
The pedestrian, a female airport employee who had just disembarked from a passenger jeepney, crossed the road seconds after disembarking, putting herself directly in the crosshairs of the cargo truck. The sudden stop caused the sheets to lurch forward into the truck's cab and crush the victims, who died at the scene.
Police said they will file criminal charges against the pedestrian and the jeepney driver due to reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
The online footage showing the pedestrian crossing the road while ignoring the traffic signal light will be used as evidence against the suspect. As seen in the footage, the jeepney driver also faces charges for illegally stopping in the corner. ■
