Malaysia's inflation edges up 2 pct in May

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's inflation edged up 2 percent in May with the index points recorded at 132.8 as against 130.2 in the same month of the previous year, official data showed Tuesday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the increase in May was driven by the rise in the main group of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (3.2 percent); restaurant and accommodation services (3.2 percent) and personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services (3 percent).

The food and beverages group which contributes 29.8 percent of the total consumer price index (CPI) weight recorded a slower increase of 1.8 percent in May.

The overall monthly inflation for May recorded an increase of 0.3 percent as compared to 0.2 percent in the previous month.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's core inflation in May increased 1.9 percent, the same rate as in April.
